We've put together a selection of different styles of yoga with our different teachers. It's a great idea to try all the different classes and find which style is the best one for you. All our teachers are highly trained and experienced in teaching all levels Below is a breakdown of the different styles you'll find at the The Studio.
Ashtanga: This style of yoga is characterized by a focus on vinyasa, or dynamic movement that connects the postures. It creates a flow between the more static traditional yoga postures. Vinyasa translates as linking and the system also implies the linking of the movement to the breath. Essentially the breath dictates the movement and the length of time held in the postures. Unlike some Hatha yoga styles, attention is also placed on the journey between the postures not just the postures themselves.
Expect: A good workout for the body. It may seem a bit difficult at first as it can be energetic, but will greatly increase strength and stamina quickly as well, burning calories.
Iyengar Yoga, created by B.K.S. Iyengar, is a form of yoga known for its use of props, such as belts and blocks, as aids in performing asanas (postures). It emphasizing the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration and meditation. A form of Hatha Yoga, focuses on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being. Iyengar Yoga is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well-being.
Expect: A thorough class with emphasis on the body and mind. Focus is on stretches, alignment and breath. Iyengar teachers are extremely experienced and Iyengar students will benefit from a very rounded practice with emphasis on
Vinyasa Flow: This style of yoga is a dynamic blend from the lineage of Krishnamacharya, the foremost proponent of yoga in the 20th century. Each session links the breath with dynamic Asana (postures), taught with intelligent, safe and efficient use of awareness. It strives to teach athletes and individuals how to gain more awareness of their physical and mental experience leading them to happiness and contentment in all areas of their life.
Expect: A dynamic class with emphasis on structural alignment. The class will help you to learn about your body and bring integrity to your movements. A great workout for body and mind.
'New': Yin Yoga has the same goals and objectives as any other school of yoga; however, it directs the stimulation normally created in the asana portion of the practice deeper than the superficial or muscular tissues (which we are calling the yang tissues). Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice. Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. We can remain in the postures anywhere from one to twenty minutes! Yin and yang tissues respond quite differently to being exercised. You need to experience this to really know what Yin Yoga is all about. After you have experienced it, even just once, you will realise that you have been doing only half of the asana practice. We follow the Yin period with Yang-style yoga -- moving, flowing, enjoying the new spaciousness in the hips and lower back, areas most addressed by Yin Yoga.
