The diving around Koh ngai - dive trips

The whole Phi Phi area is protected as a National Marine Park and graded a 4-star diving area (compare to Koh Tao's 3 stars) Green sea turtles and leopard sharks are common and big schools of fish and colourful, healthy coral are found in abundance. The best sites here are Bida Nok and Bida Nai which offer the best of reef diving and wall diving in one. There are lots of fan-coral and giant sponges and interesting rock formations underwater.

There are plenty of crustaceans, sea-horses, pipefish and during spawning period the waters are a glow with glistening juvenile schooling fish. Swim-Through Gardens, off Maya Bay, where they filmed the beach is true to its namesake and is worth a dive. The diving is shallow and the visibility is good year round. The surrounding karst cliffs jutting out of the water make the diving and the surfacing a dramatic event. There are enough divesites here that even in a week of diving you wouldn't see the same thing twice. The whole area is whaleshark bait in high seaons and these gentle giants are spotted regularly.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang

These are 5star divesites accessible from Phi Phi Island by speed boat. Only open in the high season due to rough seas, manta rays are spotted on 90% of dives. But it's not for this that they are graded World Class. Found in open water they are comprised of two sea-mounts, situated close to one another, one breaching the water.

The visibility is reliably 30m plus and they are deep dives. The coral on the mounts is healthy with lots of soft coral giving them their names: Purple Rock and Pink Rock. Beside the abundance of reef-fish the surrounding waters are teeming with schools of fish meeting in the currents. Schools of batfish, jacks, snapper, rainbow runners, fusiliers and barracuda are found in their thousand and giant morays, different kinds of triggerfish and sharks are common. Whalesharks are often seen around these waters. Incredible dives.

King Cruiser

Situated directly between Phi Phi and Phuket, lies the Wreck of the King Cruiser. No longer penetrable due to dilapidation this enormous car ferry, once used to transport tourists, is home to many thousands or schooling fish and despite the currents and often low visibility offers the feeling of being in an over crowded fish bowl.

Combined with the nearby Shark and Anemone Reefs, this three-dive-day will not disappoint. The coral at both those sites is soft and healthy and there are schools of snapper in their thousands hanging out on the corners of the reef. Leopard sharks, turtles and sea snakes are common here besides the usual selection of reef fish.

Conditions

Visibility:

Is better in high season but the diving is still remarkable year. It ranges from 12m to 35m.

Temperature:

The water is always warm ranging from 29°c to 31°c.

Depth:

None of the divesites around Phi Phi exceed 30m with the average depth being around 18m-20m. The Wreck sits in 32m of water with the average depth at Shark Point and Anemone Reef being around 25m-20m, deeper dives. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are deeper dives with the seabed visible below at 50m-60m.

Currents:

The currents are completely avoidable at the Marine Park and vary around the park. If there are strong currents on one side of the park there will be slack conditions on the other.

The King Cruiser often has stronger currents as can Shark Point and Anemone Reef. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are often subjected to strong currents due to their position in the open ocean, but these can be avoided by sticking to certain sides.

Ability:

The dives at the Marine Park are shallow enough for any level of divers and is a great place to learn. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are for more experienced divers as they are deeper dives and The King Cruiser, Shark Point and Anemone Reef for mixed ability. None of the divesites have been affected by last years tsunami.

The diving in Malta

Gozo lies in the heart of the Mediterranean as part of the Maltese Archipelago.

Its limestone cliffs rise up to an impressive 150 meters above sea level and drop down to 100 meters below. This creates a unique topography, offering a huge variety of world-class dive sites to choose from.

Gozo is known as one of the best diving destinations in the Mediterranean. You can dive wrecks, caves and tunnels, shallow reefs, drop offs and archways, which are unforgettable due to a 20 – 40 meter visibility.

The marine life around the Maltese Islands is abundant with a variety of species. This ranges from large schools of barracudas and jacks to small shy seahorses and octopus. If you are lucky, moonfish, eagle rays and even sharks can be seen.
