Ireland - Activities

Lots to do or do nothing at all...

The Little Yoga Cottage is the perfect place to get away from it all. It is peaceful and quiet with stunning views and is a great place to relax, unwind and refresh yourself completely. If you feel like exploring or getting active however, there is lots to do in the area and we are very happy to help you organise anything you like. Below is a list of what to do in your free-time.

Treatments

We have our own treatment room and are proud to offer you 3 treatments with our fantastic team of therapists: Reiki, Massage and Kinesiology

Reiki - €40

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Michelle first came across the wonderful healing powers of Reiki when she was living in Thailand. She is attuned to level II in the Tera Mai lineage. Sessions last 60 minutes.

Massage - €45

Frankie Parker, our in-house massage therapist, trained at the Manchester School of Massage and holds a VTCT qualification in Swedish and Holistic Massage Therapy. Depending on whether you are seeking treatment for relaxation or if you have a specific area to focus on, Frankie will tailor to your individual needs. Massage is a wonderful way to relax and unwind. Massage helps to reduce stress and tension and relieve tired, aching joints and muscles. A healthy and natural remedy, massage will help improve circulation and digestion, soothes nerves and creates a calming sense of well being. Treatments are 60 minutes with an initial 15 miniute consultation included in the price.

Kinesiology - More info coming soon...

Surfing: Yoga & Surfing – a perfect match:

  • eliminates aches and pains in your back, knees and hips
  • improves your surfing fitness so you're stronger and more powerful
  • increases your paddling power so you get into waves easier
  • get to your feet faster so you can ride more of the wave
  • recover quickly so you won’t miss any days of a new swell
  • feel more flexible and fitter than ever before
  • surf stronger and longer -- with more energy, endurance and confidence
  • feel calm and focused in challenging conditions both in and out of the water
  • surf bigger and faster waves with confidence and competence

Surfing continued...

Clare has some of the best surfing spots in Ireland. There is a good beach break in Lahinch that is perfect for beginners. There are also various reef breaks running off Liscannor Bay and the famous breaks at Doughmor and Spanish Point. Clare is also home to the famous Aileens wave, so huge and mighty it is vying for the position as one of the world’s biggest.

The beach break in Lahinch is the perfect place to learn or even hone your skills. With a consistent swell the waves are surfable most of the year. With waters that don’t get too cold thanks to the Gulf Stream, surfing has never been as accessible or fun as it is in Clare. We operate in conjunction with Ben’s Surf Clinic, Ireland’s first ISA hardboard approved surf school in Ireland. Ben and his team offer lessons for every level and classroom sessions are conducted in the comfort of your own living room at the Lodge. For more on the Yoga & Surfing weekends/weeks please see the Schedule page.

Hiking

The Burren is one of Europe’s most unique Landscapes, where the views heal your mind and soul. With beautiful views and fields made of angular slabs of karst rock its like a lunar landscape. With extremely rare plants, flowers and animals and a history to rival any fairytale a walk in Burren is an experience of a lifetime. Many people drive through the grassy roads of the Burren, but taking the time to get right out into it, to feel it, is something we strongly recommend. We can help to arrange a hike for you but we recommend giving advance notice if you are planning to hike.

Music

The area is rich in music and has something for everyone. Doolin, a 15 minute drive away is the birthplace of traditional Irish Music and people from all over the world come here to listen, play and record. Some of the greatest trad players of our time got their start in Co.Clare and neighbouring Miltown Malbay hosts the Willie Clancy, week long music festival each year. There are trad sessions daily and no trip to Clare is complete without experiencing one of these. Lahinch is also home to some new and original music, and Kenny’s White Horse Sessions, across the street from the Lodge, is setting the pace with a continually impressive line for such a small quiet seaside village.

Golf

Lahinch has one of the most famous and challenging links courses in the country, probably the world. Set on immaculately preserved sand banks, there are stunning views of the Atlantic and the surrounding countryside. With advance notice we can book you a round for this course but if you'd still like to golf but on something a bit easier you can try the Castle Course which is situated behind the Links Course. You will need to bring your own clubs.

Ireland - Accomodation

You will be staying in a beautiful converted Irish country cottage. Set in a  stunning, private garden, with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and the Atlantic Ocean, the cottage is charming and comfortable. The walls are made of Liscannor stone, sourced locally, and there is a large wood-burning stove to chill out around and relax.

Accommodation is all on a shared basis and we have 3 rooms. Each room sleeps 2 to 3 guests and has its own bathroom. The upstairs bedroom has 3 single beds. There are 2 downstairs rooms, one has 2 double beds and the other has a single bed and a bunk-bed. There are 3 bathrooms and we have a bath upstairs if you fancy relaxing with a few candles and a book. All the rooms have amazing views, taking in the gardens, the countryside and the sea.

We have made every effort to ensure your comfort, and the duvets, pillows, sheets and bedding are all of the hightest quality. Guests have all commented on how well they have slept while in the cottage. The rooms are tastefully decorated, and the rooms are large enough to relax in if you want to put your feet up.

Yoga classes are conducted in the main room in the house with lots of light streaming in and views of the garden, the countryside and the sea. We keep the group sizes small to allow for quality of service, both in the yoga classes and in every other part of your stay.

We have our own treatment room in the house and are happy to offer 3 treatments at affordable rates during your stay. Massage, Reiki and Kinesiology are offered by our experienced team-members. Sessions are available during the day and can be booked either before or while you are there.

The cottage is located in a country area called Moymore and is apx 4 miles outside Lahinch. With grass growing in the middle of the road, it is a relaxed and peaceful part of rural Ireland. There are a number of walks, each of them loops, right outside the front door. They take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the sea. Choose from a short 20 minute ramble to a longer 2 - 3 hour hike and enjoy the true beauty of the countryside.

Meals are served in the kitchen or in the garden (when weather premits) and in your free time the cottage is yours to relax in and make your own space. At the end of the garden in a wooden deck with stunning views. When the weather is warm we practice yoga here and do our evening meditations under the stars.

One of the highlights of your stay is the food. We have a delicious menu of healthy food that will both satisfy your hunger and your taste buds. We grow our own herbs and salad and always have an abundance of sprouts. As often as possible our food is locally sourced. Meals are vegetarian and we can cater for specific diets. During the weekend we offer freshly squeezed juices and a range of smoothies are included too. Some of the desserts are raw and organic, which means not only are they delicious, but they are healthy too! A range of herbal teas are available at all times too.

We also offer a raw chocolate making desmonstration (everyone gets to sample them afterwards!) and guests are welcome to sit with a cup of tea in the kitchen while the food is being prepared and observe what goes on behind the scenes with the food. Guests comments have all said how much they love the food, and we enjoy feeding people food that is not only delicious and satistfying, but that is healthy too. Most of the ingredients we use can be purchased right here in rural Ireland. It means that you too can go home and make the same dishes on your return.

Ireland - Yoga Teacher

Michelle Riordan

Hi! My name is Michelle and I'm really looking forward to meeting you at The Little Yoga Cottage. I'm the co-founder of Yogatraveller and this is the combination of all the skills and experience we have gained running retreats and yoga holidays all over the world. We've settled back on home ground after many years of travel and living abroad and are delighted to offer yoga weekends at our own little retreat centre in one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Little Yoga Cottage is the culmination of all of my yoga, mediation and food passions over the past 12 years of my life and I'm excited to share it all with you!

I've been practicing yoga for 12 years and teaching full-time for the last 5 of these. I trained initially at the Sivananda Ashram in the Himalayas, India, and have continued to learn and grow, working at the Health Oasis Yoga and Detox Centre on Koh Samui, Thailand, then studying teacher training in Galway, Ireland with Carol Murphy of Green Lotus Yoga.

My style is grounded in the Kristyamacharya lineage with influences of Iyengar, Ashtanga and classical Hatha. I have completed the Level II Anusara Immersion and has been fortunate enough to have attended workshops from some of the world’s greatest yoga teachers, who have all inspired my own style of teaching.

My teaching style is friendly, informative, challenging and fun. I teach Hatha, Vinyasa, Yoga Therapy, Restorative, Yin Yoga and meditation and can offer different classes to suit different needs and levels. My morning classes are more dynamic with a strong focus on standing postures and alignment, focusing on hand and foot positions, and allowing the natural intelligence of the body to build strength and flexibility.

On a physical level, we work through the main areas of yoga: Warm-ups, sun salutations, standing poses, sitting poses, hip openers, twists, core work, balances, back-bends, inversions, warm-downs and savasana. With only small groups, I am able to tailor the classes to each level focusing and observing each student in the capacity of strengths, weaknesses and limitations. It can really help your practice to have someone assess areas to work on, and tips for getting the most of your body type, which isn't always possible in a busy studio environment.

Column 2 Content:

There is a strong focus on breath-work in my classes, and I encourage students to find the ease and flow in all their postures, whether holding a standing posture for a long time, breathing into a sitting hip opener or jumping through sunsalutes. You will be guided to tune into your energetic body and to explore what it is you need in your practice, to balance you on all levels. I encourage students to find the softness in the postures, and that even when we are working really hard, with grace, flow and ease, we can achieve more, not just physically, but by allowing the work to seep deep into our mental, emotional and spiritual planes.

My afternoon classes really allow us to travel deep into the body, and give us the opportunity to tune in with what's going on with our bodies, mind and emotions. We use the breath and a strong sense of self-awareness to generate prana; allowing us to work through physical and emotional blocks to let this life-energy to flow through us freely. We use these classes to explore the Yin side of yoga, the softer, more feminine side. Sometimes the work we do in the afternoon classes can have a far more profound effect than the stronger, more Yang based morning practice.

I have been teaching for years and have taught many different things. I have taught children in school, English as a second language to adults in Hong Kong, Scuba Diving in many many remote places around the world and yoga at all our Yogatraveller destinations. I love meeting people and love to get to know guests on my yoga retreats. I have trained in Buddhist meditation and have undergone other meditation trainings too.

Besides yoga, I love to surf, dive, snowboard and hike, I love reading and writing, and one of my particular interests is in food. I love cooking and preparing raw food and especially enjoy serving people tasty, delicious and yet healthy food on my retreats.

One of my greatest interests is travel and I have lived and worked in countries all over the world, including many parts of Asia, Africa and Europe and I have travelled to many other far-flung places, some of which my family have never heard of! I am married to Michael, co-founder of Yogatraveller and together with our 2 year old son we are settled on the West of Ireland and are currently expecting our second child.
